REINVENTING DISCOVERY: HOW ONLINE TOOLS ARE TRANSFORMING SCIENCE
We are in the midst of a major new scientific revolution: the internet is dramatically transforming the way we make discoveries, allowing us to do things ’harder, smarter, faster’. Online collaborations are allowing us to crack a host of previously intractable problems by making it easier and faster to bring together people from different backgrounds and disciplines. And it’s a scientific revolution in which we can all get involved. REINVENTING DISCOVERY is packed with inspiring and entertaining examples of projects that anyone can join: from amateur astronomers who are helping to map the universe, to the rise of open-source software, or the group of amateur chess players who were able to give Garry Kasparov a run for his money. The potential rewards of this new era are extraordinary. The human genome was first mapped just ten years ago and tremendous medical advances have already been made. But the genome was mapped so quickly precisely because scientists agreed that the work was so important that everyone involved should collaborate. However, the vast majority of scientific research is not done in this way: logistical or commercial concerns prevent people from sharing information. Michael argues that this needs to change urgently if we are to reap the full benefits of the internet and offers clear, practical advice on how we can all make sure this happens.
Chinese Summary/
(Claire)

About the Author/作者介绍: Michael Nielsen is one of the pioneers of quantum computation and quantum information. He was educated at the University of Queensland and as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of New Mexico. He was a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Richard Chace Tolman Prize fellow at the California Institute of Technology, foundation professor of quantum information science at the University of Queensland, and a senior faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada. He left the Perimeter Institute in 2008 to become a full-time writer. He has written numerous articles for the popular science press, including Scientific American and Nature, and runs a popular online blog (http://michaelnielsen.org/blog) which was named by the Sunday Times as one of the top 100 blogs in the world. Some of his blog posts relating to REINVENTING DISCOVERY have been downloaded more than 20,000 times. Michael has also been invited to speak on the topics covered in the book at Google, the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Library of Congress among others.
