DE REDAN DODA (ENGLISH TITLE: THE SWEDE)
Set in the American midwest and a small island in the Indian Ocean, THE SWEDE tells the story of what the war on terrorism does to people on the outskirts and blanked out spaces of this conflict. Royal bodyguard and member of the Swedish secret police Ernst Grip gets summoned to New York from Sweden by the FBI and taken to a remote Pacific atoll, in order to question a prisoner believed to be Swedish. He finds himself facing a silent, shadowy figure in prison who has been tortured. Grip slowly unravels the prisoner’s story which is somehow connected to a string of art thefts, as well as a bank robbery in Topeka, Kansas and the farthest reaches of the war on terrorism. Together with FBI agent Shauna Friedman, Grip must determine whether the prisoner is Swedish (thus identifying him as a criminal known as “N.” or “the Swede”), but Grip then comes to realize that his own life is inextricably intertwined with the unnamed prisoner’s. THE SWEDE is a tightly-plotted thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats while also playing intriguingly with our notions of nationality and the nature of identity. But this brief synopsis does not really do justice to the book’s plotting, especially the way widely separated individuals and places are connected by threads to the past. Both Grip and FBI agent Friedman are "mixed" figures, blending integrity and strength with moral lapses. Grip also has artistic sensibilities as well as physical prowess. His gay/bisexual side is unusual in this genre. And the seldom-described base on Diego Garcia is an exotic setting. Karjel plays on the theme of dual/shared identity (between Grip and N.; they are linked by nationality and the fact that N. found, and used Grip’s lost passport in Thailand). Karjel is clearly familiar with the world of security and crime investigation in the locales he describes. In this novel of tangled ideologies and false alliances no one is who he seems to be. Not even Grip himself.
