At the heart of his book are two fundamental methodological questions: (1) Can we prioritize the abundant evidence we now have for understanding Greek religion and agree on the central underlying issues? (2) Is it possible then to develop a larger theoretical framework that unites the work of archaeologists, literary scholars, and historians? Rather than follow well-worn interpretive traditions within Classical studies, Parker moves outside the ancient world when necessary and takes cues from the study of modern religion. The breadth of his reach also is surprising; frequently he cites scholarship on other religious traditions as well as from mainline comparative religion. The themes he considers most central to his work are the epistemological basis of Greek religion; the relation of ritual to belief; the nature of gods and heroes; the meaning of rituals for those performing them; the processes by which decisions on religious matters were made in a society that lacked authoritative religious specialists; and the varying forms of religious experience available within any one Greek community. He also covers a broad time span—the archaic, classical, and Hellenistic periods.

Parker is Wykeham Professor of Ancient History at New College, University of Oxford.
