URBAN FLOW: BIKE MESSENGERS AND THE CITY

English Summary/英文概要: "I cannot count the number of times I have heard messengers describe their occupation as ’the best job ever.’" – from the book Even with increasingly digitized communication, some packages must be delivered in person. In large cities bike messengers often are the best option for this. It is a physically exhausting job, dodging in and out of traffic in all weather to meet clients’ tight deadlines, and most do it for very little pay and no benefits. For many, however, it is the foundation for an all-encompassing lifestyle integrating work and leisure, and an essential part of their identity. Making good use of participant observation as a bike messenger in three large American cities, Kidder offers a riveting ethnography of this vibrant subculture as he explains why a low-end service job (rife with danger and offering minimal material compensation) produces so much attachment that people throw parties celebrating it. Within his answer are provocative insights into work in the postindustrial economy and the role of identity in low-wage work. A central part of Kidder’s contribution is his analysis of emotions and physical space in relation to work and identity. His is a complex study in the guise of an entertaining look into a little understood part of the urban landscape.

(LNL)
