THE SOLDIER’S WIFE

This new novel begins in June 1940, just before the start of the Occupation. Vivienne lives at Le Colombier, an old farmhouse, with her two daughters - Blanche, fourteen, and Millie, four, and her acerbic mother-in-law, Evelyn, who suffers from dementia. Vivienne’s husband, Eugene, is away in the army. The marriage is an unhappy one, and Vivienne has tried to close her mind to his extra-marital affairs. France has fallen, and Vivienne is trying to decide whether to take her daughters on the last boat to the mainland. She chooses to go, but at the last moment, afraid, she pulls her daughters away and takes them back home. A few days later, Vivienne, who has gone to St. Peter Port to meet her best friend Gwen, sees German planes bombing the waterfront. Vivienne rushes down to the harbour: a line of tomato trucks have been hit, and blood mingled with tomato juice flows across the pier. She comes upon Frank le Brocq, the husband of her friend Angie; he is badly injured, and she kneels beside him as he dies. The Germans arrive. The house next door to Le Colombier is requisitioned, and German officers move in. Vivienne’s initial fear dissipates, and she’s shocked to find herself attracted to one of the men. Their ensuing love affair against the background of the foreign slave workers and the discovering of rotting bodies in the Alderney harbour begins to tear her world apart. Then her daughter Millie keeps talking about a ghost and Vivienne is at first afraid that her little girl can’t distinguish between truth and fantasy, because of all the fairytales she reads to her. But it comes to light that the man Millie has seen is white with cement dust and wearing an old cement sack. His name is Kirill and comes from Belarus, where he and his fellow villagers were used as human mine-detectors by the Germans before they were sent to labour camps in occupied Europe. He is dying on her doorstep and Vivienne has to make a life and death decision about whether she will put her family’s lives at risk for this desperate stranger, while her affair with the German officer carries on.
