OBLIVION: STORIES

Book ID/图书代码: 04940010B41676

English Summary/英文概要: In the stories that make up Oblivion, David Foster Wallace joins the rawest, most naked humanity with the infinite involutions of self-consciousness--a combination that is dazzlingly, uniquely his. These are worlds undreamt-of by any other mind. Only David Foster Wallace could convey a father’s desperate loneliness by way of his son’s daydreaming through a teacher’s homicidal breakdown ("The Soul Is Not a Smithy"). Or could explore the deepest and most hilarious aspects of creativity by delineating the office politics surrounding a magazine profile of an artist who produces miniature sculptures in an anatomically inconceivable way ("The Suffering Channel"). Or capture the ache of love’s breakdown in the painfully polite apologies of a man who believes his wife is hallucinating the sound of his snoring ("Oblivion"). Each of these stories is a complete world, as fully imagined as most entire novels, at once preposterously surreal and painfully immediate. Oblivion is an arresting and hilarious creation from a writer "whose best work challenges and reinvents the art of fiction" (Atlanta Journal-Constitution).

Praise for OBLIVION:

“David Foster Wallace writes so beautifully, is so show-offishly smart and understands the intricacies of human emotion so keenly...” –Time

"If language packs a punch, then David Foster Wallace’s collection of short stories, Oblivion, is a knockout blow. These stories are stunning - in both senses of the word."–The Guardian

"David Foster Wallace comes with a high reputation to live up to, and in these superbly written stories, he does... There is a strong element of jokiness in these tales, but it is a deadpan, cumulative humour, not satire of the stand aloof, easily mocking variety... Here he has shown once again that his is a major and entirely distinct talent." –Sunday Telegraph

"David Foster Wallace has earned a place as one of America’s most daring and talented young writers. His use of language is pyrotechnic, and he is impatient with traditional narrative forms. In his new collection, Oblivion, he is up to his customary tricks, but he has also plumbed a little deeper in matters of the heart. Those who are familiar with Wallace’s inventive wordplay will not be disappointed."–Los Angeles Times

"With his new story collection, David Foster Wallace has perfected a particularly subtle form of horror story…"–Salon
