PHANTOMS IN THE SNOW
The year is 1944 and fifteen year old Noah Garrett’s parents have died from smallpox. Lacking family nearby, Noah is sent to live with his uncle whom he has never met. There is one small problem with this decision: Noah has been raised a pacifist and his uncle is based at Camp Hale. On the train ride to Colorado, Noah encounters two pilots, headed for their own training base in Denver. In a brief conversation, he learns what the U.S. military thinks about his uncle and the guys of Camp Hale: “Phantoms…that’s what we call them –the soldiers that ski. You can’t even see them when they’re in the mountains. They disappear like ghosts. They can ski and hike faster than normal people…it’s spooky.”
Noah’s struggle to bring his upbringing and the reality of the horrors of World War ll into a way of living he can believe in takes him from the training base in Colorado as an underage soldier to Camp Swift in Texas and ultimately to the Alps of Italy and a pivotal battle in which the Phantoms turned the tide of war. The story of the Tenth Mountain Division is one of courage and conviction, brotherhood and the joy in living.
