Bologna, autumn 1312. Mondino de’ Liuzzi has to investigate the death of a man whose body was found burned to death in his house. But there is no sign of fire, even the armchair on which the man was sitting is undamaged. Mondino has to ask for Gerardo of Castel bretone’s help, the young templar who helped him in the first episode, and who now lives in a convent as a layman.

Thanks to a tattoo representing Zurvàn, a lion-headed winged monster, whose body is wrapped in the coils of a snake, the two men find out a sect worshipping Mithra, the Persian God of the sun and the fire.

The adepts are convinced that Evil is taking possession of the world: the only thing to do is giving up the fight and devote themselves to Mithra. But this needs to be done after setting fire to the city in order to purify as many souls as possible. The fire will have to take place the day of the winter solstice, a sacred date which passed into the Christian tradition from the ancient pagan one.

In fact it is now called Christmas: 25 December is approaching, not much time is left …

About the Author/作者介绍： Alfredo Colitto was born in Campobasso, studied at Bologna, and has long lived abroad, mostly in Messico, where his first novel, Café Nopal (Alacrán, 2005) was set. He also wrote several hort stories published in famous anthologies and collections: Killers & Co.
