BROOKLYN HEIGHTS

The novel, described as “a novel of displacement and exile par excellence” by the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature judge’s panel, takes us from each character’s childhood in a patriarchal society, to the decision to leave their husbands and lives in the Middle East and North Africa in favour of a new life in the US. Each character struggles in her attempt to reconcile her religious and cultural past.
Told through the eyes of the Egyptian narrator, who draws parallels between her new life in America and her past in Egypt, the novel explores the relationship between the East and the West through the very humanistic stories of the characters. The novel runs the full gamut of elements that are intrinsic to a story of this nature – from fundamentalism to tolerance, from comfort to displacement.

Chinese Summary/
