English Summary/英文概要: TAPESTRY, an historical mystery and women’s novel, weaves in and out of the lives of an eleventh century embroideress and a contemporary lecturer in medieval history.
In West Minster, England, 1064, Leofgyth, embroideress at the court of Edward the Confessor and Queen Edith, has been taught to scribe by her monk friend Odericus. From inside the Saxon court, Leofgyth chronicles the dramatic events leading up to the year of 1066 and the Norman Conquest. Her journals reveals the secret alliances of one woman who tried to change the course of history, a woman pitted against the plotting of Harold Godwin and William of Normandy and the shocking oath they swore on a priceless holy treasure.
In 2001 Madeleine, an attractive but vulnerable single woman who lectures in medieval history and prefers staying in to going out, travels from her home in Normandy to Canterbury when her English mother collapses and dies. After the funeral, Madeleine is invited to visit eccentric and elderly cousins, Mary and Margaret Broder, in their manor house. The Broder sisters give her a manuscript which she immediately recognises as being extremely old. As Madeleine translates the medieval Latin, she begins to appreciate the astonishing implications of the journal. This is not the story of pre-Conquest England as she teaches it, nor is it the story as charted in the Bayeau Tapestry. What is the provenance of the Bayeau Tapestry, and are there clues in the tapestry? As Madeleine translates the journal and delves deep into the archives at Canterbury, the puzzle begins to unravel.
TAPESTRY takes the reader on an enthralling journey from the Anglo-Saxon court through the Reformation to the present, where that which was lost is found and Madeleine finds the prospect of happiness.
