THE SWEET SECOND LIFE OF DARRELL KINCAID
No one knows ’happy endings’ like romance novelist Darrell Kincaid. She’s delivered eight of them to her readers with pleasure. But it’s not to be with book number nine.
In the act of adding the final full stop, Darrell has a revelation: it’s not the ending that really matters but what comes next. Darrell now sees that when her husband Tom died (twenty-one months and three days ago, but who’s counting?) she lost more than the man she loved. She lost her own ’happy ever after’. The life she expected to live has gone, vanished forever in a puff of fickle, unfair smoke.
Darrell knows she has a choice. She can stay in New Zealand and live a half-life, or she can leave in search of something - perhaps someone - else. So Darrell decides upon London, the least romantic capital she knows (why set yourself up for disappointment?). Armed with Nancy Mitford’s Love In A Cold Climate as her guide to proper Englishness and the ideal romantic hero, she sets out to live the sweet second life she deserves.
CATHERINE ROBERTSON was born in Wellington, March 7, 1966, in a Salvation Army home for unwed mothers. Her mother was not, in fact, unwed, so she’s not entirely sure of the rationale behind this. She went to Wellington Girls (as did Katherine Mansfield) and Victoria University (here our paths diverged; Katherine went off to die young, and she gained a so-so degree in English literature, and did absolutely no creative writing). She’s married to David, and they have two boys: Finn (14, Leif Garret hair, leather jacket, electric guitar) and Callum (19, Fine Arts student, plays soccer, creates graphic novels). They have worked together since 1993, and are still married. They sold their first business to set up a dot.com in San Francisco (sheer madness), and escaped briefly to England before coming back to Wellington and their house by the sea. They now own and run a marketing business. CATHERINE ROBERTSON teaches budding entrepreneurs through Grow Wellington’s ’Activate’ programme, and she contributes to the DominionPost weekend magazines. She’s a moderately competent cook and gardener, and she reads compulsively. Her first novel, ’The Sweet Second Life of Darrell Kincaid’ was written in what would otherwise have been her spare time.
