The novel opens with Matteo, a recluse, in spiritual retreat in the middle of the forest. He is an elderly man and he is writing to his beloved wife, long gone. As he tells his story – alternating with his present, aesthetic life in a harsh natural contact – we learn that he was once a cardiologist, the son of a simple mother and a blind father, victim of war. He married the love of his life, Nora, who met her end in a tragic and mysterious car accident, with their young son and pregnant with another.
What follows Matteo’s loss is the “stuff” of life: pain, anger, and alcohol until he meets another woman, Larissa, a young woman from Romania who loves him without reserve. What happens in that relationship leads Matteo to a dark place of no return. Meanwhile, the only guidance he receives, guidance he doesn’t hear to until it is too late, comes from his blind father whose other senses allow him to penetrate into his son’s essence.
A mysterious visitor in the end brings him a surprising revelation.

About the Author/作者介绍： Susanna Tamaro (Trieste 1957) is the author of ten adult books, including “Follow Your Heart”, and four children’s books which have sold over 15 million copies in more than 45 countries.
