FRIENDFLUENCE: THE SURPRISING WAYS FRIENDS MAKE US WHO WE ARE

Book ID/图书代码: 12844010B42705

English Summary/英文概要: Over the last year many media outlets have put a spotlight on the emerging science and culturally evolving nature of friendship. The New York Times, for one, has run articles ranging from Are Your Friends Making You Fat? to Can an Enemy Be a Child’s Friend? to The End of the Best Friend to Are 5,001 Facebook Friends One Too Many? to Bonds of Friendship Seen Among Male Macaque Monkeys. Many of these stories have found themselves on top ten lists of the “most forwarded” NYT’s articles, pointing to the public interest in the topic.

As a respected psychology journalist and features editor at Psychology Today -- a magazine with three million readers in the US -- Carlin Flora knows a hot topic when she sees it. Despite the growing attention to the social and evolutionary science of friendship, she was surprised that no book for a general audience has broadly addressed the science of friendship. With FRIENDFLUENCE: How Friends Make Us Who We Are, Flora fills that void. Weaving together scientific research on friendship with narratives from people she will interview, stories of famous friendships, and personal observations, Flora creates an engaging book with mainstream appeal. The same audience drawn to popular social science books (from Nudge to Blink), shows about our lives (like The Oprah Winfrey Show), and books about friendships (from The Girls of Ames to First Wives Club) will be the target of FRIENDFLUENCE.

About the Author/

Carlin Flora is particularly well-positioned to write and promote FRIENDFLUENCE. While this is her first “authored” book, she ghost-wrote Susan Krauss Whitborne’s The Search For Fulfillment (Ballantine, 2009), a popular psychology book that received a starred review in Publishers Weekly and was praised for “the elegant prose with which she conveys her complex research.” With over 150 articles written for Psychology Today, Flora is skilled at drawing people out in interviews and interweaving their narratives with compelling distillations of the latest science and health findings. She also writes blog posts on Psychology Today’s website (which gets five million visits each month) and manages more than 100 bloggers for the site, all of whom are prominent researchers, clinicians, and mental health journalists. Articulate, smart and attractive, Flora is a talented media presence, too. In her role as psychology expert at Psychology Today, she has been interviewed by a variety of outlets, including appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and CNN as well as on radio stations like BBC News and NPR, among many others.
