Book ID/图书代码: 06840010B42833
English Summary/英文概要: A passionate, heartrending saga with an unsolved murder that consumes three lives and keeps you turning the pages, THE ORPHANS OF RACE POINT is a novel of suspense, betrayal, and the different ways we find transcendence and meaning in our lives. Nineyearold Hallie Costa is growing up on Cape Cod in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when a crime shakes her close knit Portuguese community.
Codfish Silva, the captain of the town’s most prolific fishing boat has strangled his wife, leaving behind a solitary witness: his son, Gus. The traumatized boy remains mute until Hallie, the daughter of the local doctor, shows up with her version of a cure: two fish Gus must keep alive, and a copy of David Copperfield. Hallie returns every day to read aloud until Gus is finally coaxed back to speech.
Hallie and Gus fall in love at age sixteen. But when a friend makes an aggressive pass at Hallie on prom night, which ends in Hallie suffering a lifethreatening injury, Gus’s guilt leads to a choice that shocks all those who think they know him: He enters the seminary. Hallie is heartbroken and angry, but upon her recovery, she knows she must move on, and she follows her father into medicine.
Gus’s solitary life is disrupted when Ava Cilento appears at his rectory with injuries that are eerily similar to his mother’s. In an effort to save her family from his family’s fate, he becomes more personally involved than he should; and when Ava disappears, leaving a horrifically bloody crime scene, Gus is charged with murder. Fate brings Hallie and Gus together again: this time at Gus’s trial.
Though it is clear their passion for one another is still strong, it seems that fate has determined they are not meant to be together. Little do they know, however, that Ava’s daughter Mila may hold the key to the truth, and to Gus’s freedom.

Awards/获奖情况:“Set against the rocky coast of Province town, Patry’s fierce, ravishing epic cuts deep to the bone about how love binds us together and breaks us apart, and how the past’s thumbprint rests on the present. Tender, violent, and alive, it’s also unforgettable.” --Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You“In THE ORPHANS OF RACE POINT, Patry Francis has poured a lifetime of wisdom into a thrilling, twisting plot, which holds up the human heart as a prism, turning it to show its many facets, its shadows and light. Each time you think you know where the story’s headed, Patry surprises. And just when you think you’ve plunged into the endless dark, she lets the light flood in. The story is at once intimate and far-reaching. This is a book that satisfies right down to the last perfect lines which raised the hair on my arms.
