About the Author/作者介绍： I grew up in St Andrews, Scotland, and though I now rarely spend more than a few weeks at a time there, it is still the place I think of when someone mentions home. I left in 2000, aged seventeen, and headed to the Pacific. A two week stopover in Tonga turned into months: months of living with a woman named Tema and her seven kids, months of sleeping on the floor and eating with my fingers, months of kava and bucket showers, and months of writing. I dragged myself back to Britain and university. I studied at The University of Durham; English Literature and Spanish (though most of that was learnt in my year abroad in Ecuador). Then, in 2005, knowing only that I wanted to write and not sure what to do next, I went to Bath Spa University and took an MA in Creative Writing. Over that year Tema and her children became Amalia and her slightly smaller brood and The Sea on our Skin took the shape it holds today. Research trips back to the islands have filled the intervening years – how exactly do you weave a mat, how do you cook palusami? I now live in New Zealand with my Fijian fiancée. I am currently teaching English as a foreign language and writing my second novel.
