THE BROKEN VILLAGE: COFFEE, MIGRATION, AND GLOBALIZATION IN HONDURAS

English Summary/英文概要: "This is not a story about an egalitarian little Eden being corrupted by the forces of capitalist modernization.... However, the social changes wrought by migration presented qualitatively new challenges, as a functioning local economy became dependent on migrants working in distant places like Long Island and South Dakota, who lived in ways that most people in La Quebrada struggled to comprehend...." — from the book Reichman tells the story of a remote Honduran village (the pseudonymous "La Quebrada") that transformed almost overnight, because of falling coffee prices, from a thriving coffee economy to a community dependent on the migration of much of its population to the United States. Through personal stories, Reichman shows why individuals made the decision to emigrate, how these decisions were interpreted within the community, and the ways lives were changed (for better and for worse). He focuses on three specific strategies that emerged to deal with the crisis—a fair trade/organic coffee cooperative, religious campaigns for personal morality intended to counter the corrosive effects of migration, and local discourses about migrant "greed" which labeled migrants as the cause of social crisis—and shows how people attempted to make moral sense of migration and the related changes. By understanding the tensions that emerged at the local level in this one town, we gain remarkable insight into the ways globalization is changing cultures around the world.

(DC)
