PAINTER OF SILENCE

The setting is Romania both before and after the Second World War. Georgina imaginatively conjures up a country ravaged by fighting and political struggle through the post-war lives of two characters born six months apart, Safta a privileged daughter of a land owner and Augustin, the son of a cook at the manor house where they both grow up. Their paths cross when Safta, now a nurse, hears about an injured soldier, a deaf mute. Safta realises that this must be Augustin and sets out to remove him from his current predicament. As they piece together their lives Augustin tells Safta the story of what happened at the manor house after she left the only way he is able to, through a series of beautifully detailed drawings. The house of their childhood is central to the lives of both characters and draws them back. Georgina conjures up brilliantly the fall of the house to the boarded up and derelict property of the state as it now stands. It is a very tender novel about the human cost of war, a different kind of love story. Although incredibly moving it is ultimately uplifting.
