SNAKE

Everywhere praised for its mesmerizing intensity and taut, quick-witted prose, Snake tells the story of a mismatched couple -- Irene, ambitious and man-crazy, and her quiet, adoring, responsible husband, Rex -- who tumble into marriage and settle as newlyweds on a remote Australian farm. It is amid this unforgiving landscape that Irene and Rex raise their two children. It is here that, as Rex bears silent witness, Irene tends her garden and wrestles with what seems to be her fate. And it is here that their marriage unravels -- inexorably, bitterly, spectacularly.

(LNL)

"Immensely readable....A novel that simmers with energy, passion, and thoroughly unresolved tensions." -- Debra Adelide, Sydney Morning Hearald

"The brief scenes, often seemingly random and catching the absolute rub of the quotidian, possess what feels like a holographic shimmer...SNAKE is clearly the work of a powerful imagination. American readers will feel themselves fortunate to make the acquaintance of a writer like Kate Jennings." -- Carol Shields, New York Times Book Review

"The chapters in SNAKE are short, vivid bursts of imagery, anecdote, insight....It’s hard to believe a full-blown family tragedy can be told so wholly and well in such small, deft snatches, but then rarely has a poet’s skill at compaction been put to better uses in prose." -- Michelle Huneven, Los Angeles Times Book Review

From Booklist

So like us, yet so different, Australians hold an odd place in the American imagination, at once bone-familiar and disorientingly strange. Incidents that Snake (a debut novel by Australian feminist poet, essayist, and short story writer Jennings, who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 20 years) places in Australia’s sheep-farming country no doubt had parallels in Kansas or Colorado after World War II. Rex has no land: a horse his bullying younger brother abused nearly killed him, so the brother inherits the family farm. Rex returns from war silent about what he has seen, seeking only to marry, make a home, and raise children. He finds Irene, the spoiled daughter of wealthy, mismatched parents; she’s partied through the war and wants the excitement to continue. When it doesn’t, Irene’s venom poisons her world: puzzled, nonconfrontational Rex; their children, Girlie and Boy; and neighbors in the village, ironically called Progress. This brief novel’s very short chapters compose a pointillistic portrait of a painfully dysfunctional family. Mary Carroll --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
