Simon Leys is a sinologist, essayist and literary critic whose work has appeared in the New York Review of Books, Le Monde and The Monthly. His books include The Death of Napoleon, Other People’s Thoughts and The Wreck of the Batavia & Prosper . He taught Chinese literature at the Australian National University, where he supervised the honours thesis of former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd, and later was Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney, from 1987 to 1993. He delivered the Boyer Lectures in 1996. His awards include the Prix Femina and the Christina Stead Prize for fiction.
