THE LAND OF DECORATION

The Land of Decoration tells the story of a ten year old girl raised by her father, who belongs to a small religious movement in a typical industrial town. Horribly bullied at school as a misfit, the heroine, Judith, creates a model world in her room made from things nobody else wanted: little people made from pipe cleaners and stuck together; a zebra crossing made out of a supermarket bar code, a hair slide that was once a used staple. One day she creates a snow storm in her tiny world and then it snows outside. Judith believes that she can make miracles, but each miracle only seems to make things worse.

Chinese Summary/
(Claire & Chris)

Reviews
Clara Farmer, Editorial Director, Chatto & Windus says: ‘The Land of Decoration is one of those novels: the as-rare-as-hen’s-teeth debut that arrives fully formed, and is blissfully inventive, brilliantly written, with a huge heart, and a tense, pulsing plot -- and which through the eyes of its ten-year-old heroine, Judith, changes the way we see the world. It’s also a devastatingly real portrait of a father, locked in by grief, who has yet to show his daughter that he loves her. It’s a book to revel in, and adore, and cry over copiously (as my tear-streaked colleagues can testify). But more than that, this is a novel that makes you want to rush out into the street, pin passers-by to the ground, and insist that they read it. Grace McCleen’s voice is as exciting and explosive as Jeanette Winterson’s in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. Everyone at Chatto is turning cartwheels at the news that we will be publishing her.

Stephen Rubin, President and Publisher of Holt says: ‘There is a wonderful legacy of books narrated by singular young people—Room and The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime come immediately to mind—and The Land of Decoration is very much in this grand tradition. But Judith, the narrator, is not like anybody I have ever encountered. Your heart goes out to her because everything she does is fueled by faith, yet she is both naive and precocious. Her voice is thrillingly original and affecting.’

“The Land of Decoration is a novel that can move the reader from sadness to laughter with alarming suddenness. Grace McCleen’s voice sparkles with imagery and ideas, and she uses it to tell a story that is simultaneously multi-layered and absolutely compelling”- Sam Llewellyn, Chair of Desmond Elliott Judges

About the Author/作者介绍: Grace McCleen was raised in a fundamentalist religion herself, and didn’t have much contact with the outside world as a child. She says: ‘My parents were eccentric so we didn’t have much contact with other believers. We lived in an industrial town until I was ten then moved to Ireland where I was taken out of school. In the country I began to ask questions about how we knew things, about faith and reality, about what was natural, about sin and redemption. When we came back to Britain my English teacher suggested I apply to Oxford. Association with unbelievers was viewed as dangerous and further education even more so, so it was the biggest (but best) decision of my life.’
Within days have now sold US rights to Stephen Rubin and Sarah Bowlin at Holt, to Iris Tupholme at Harper Collins in Canada, to Mizzi van der Pluijm at Contact in Holland: Maggie Doyle at Laffont in France; Sigrid Kraus at Salamandra in Spain; Andrea Canobbio at Einaudi in Italy and to Marion Kohler at DVA in Germany.
