A LADY CYCLIST’S GUIDE TO KASHGAR

Frieda’s on-off boyfriend insists that she is a ‘free spirit’ but the hours spent in airport lounges and hotels are making her increasingly lonely and she has begun to crave a sense of belonging somewhere, to be a part of the same world other people seem to so easily inhabit. Abandoned by her mother as a child and estranged from her father, Frieda’s idea of family is incomplete at best so when she opens a letter stating that she is the next of kin to an Eileen Guy, a woman she has never heard of, the urge to discover where she might really belong is irresistible.

Interlaced with Frieda’s story is the 1923 diary of a missionary, Evangeline English, who pretends to have a religious calling in order to escape the claustrophobia of bourgeois English life. Heading for Kashgar on the Silk Road which, like London, is a city of traders with layers of cultures lain over each other like rugs - Uighur, Turkeman, Chinese, Muslim, Russian, Tibetan - Eva and the Mission attempt to establish an outpost in the remote Gobi desert, an area of simmering revolt with the Muslim community agitating against encroaching Chinese cultural oppression. But on their arrival, a young local girl dies giving birth to a baby girl and the Mission is blamed. Eva is as trapped in Kashgar as she was in England but now her life and the lives of everyone in the Mission, including the baby, is in danger as the revolt threatens to explode.

A Lady Cyclist’s Guide To Kashgar explores the fault lines that appear when the traditions from different parts of an increasingly globalised world crash into each other. Beautifully written and with stunning visual images, the novel pieces together each woman’s past to show the hidden link between them, how they each challenge and negotiate the restrictions of their societies as each makes their hard won way towards home, a sense of peace and an understanding their place in the world.

Chinese Summary/

(Chris)

Reviews
‘Oh I love this book! I was beguiled and enchanted — by those indomitable women with their bicycles and bibles and cigarettes, and Frieda, too, with her glasses and her owl and her touching relationship with Tayeb. It is done with the lightest of touches, but underneath there is so much, about identity and ancestry and how the unlikeliest of things get passed through generations. This is a rare thing: a book I would give to everyone to read, my friends and family and people I hardly know. We will have such a wonderful time publishing it: it is a beautiful literary novel with real commercial potential, something we delight in (from The Kite Runner to The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society), something we really know how to do’---Alexandra Pringle, Group Editor-in-Chief, Bloomsbury

‘In Suzy Joinson’s extraordinary novel, we have found the perfect book and the perfect author for Bloomsbury. In this beautifully written and utterly captivating novel, with its lady cyclist, its owl, its paintings and its characters who are all searching and fleeing and discovering - and connected to each other in ways that they do not, at first understand - Suzy explores ideas of history and religion, inheritance and belonging, with delicacy and empathy. This is a book with prize-winning potential and a serious intent that also happens to be delightful, witty, deeply moving and unputdowneable. We are thrilled to be publishing it.’---Helen Garnons-Williams, Commissioning Editor, Bloomsbury
