Adeline Murphy is an unemployed architect. Her life seems to be on a disastrous course when she meets Bruno Behan. She has split up with her long-term boyfriend, she has inadvertently been the cause of a car crash that left a young mother badly injured, and she is caring for her cantankerous father after a bizarre domestic accident left him with two broken wrists. Addie is trying to make a life out of solitary pleasures: she swims in the pool, she walks her dog on the beach, she sits at her desk sketching fantasy swimming pools. She has come to the conclusion that maybe that’s all there is in store for her and she doesn’t mind. When she first meets Bruno she doesn’t recognise him for what he is, the man of her life.

At the same time Bruno is, for the first time in his life, absolutely at sea. A middle aged, jobless banker, he is looking for meaning. Both have long since given up hope of ever falling in love.

As the world economy teeters around them, Addie and Bruno begin their perfect romance. Over three joyous weeks, bit by bit, they place their lives in each other’s hands. But just as this new life is opening up in front of her, The unthinkable happens. Addie is diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer: she has weeks to live.

They marry three months to the day after their first meeting. A tiny wedding, just family and very close friends. Addie arranges for someone to sing “I never promised you a Rose Garden,” and she and Bruno dance together while everyone else cries. Within the week, she’s dead.

Kathleen MacMahon is an award winning journalist with Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE.
