MOSCOW: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Moscow is a major European capital city with multilayered character of a enormous village which appears like in matryoshka doll, bit by bit. It’s a megalopolis of more than ten million inhabitants where any displacement implies a journey through time. It has been called once “the Third Rome” (Rome and Byzantium, two capitals of the Roman Empire, being the first and second), later Madame de Stael nicknamed it the “Tartar Rome”, and it ended up being the “Communist Rome”.

Since it was first mentioned in chronicles of 1147, Moscow has played a vital role in Russian history; indeed the history of the city and of the Russian nation are closely interlinked. One may say that Moscow is a concentrated Russia, which always was and continues to be a place where the border line between Asia and Europe, an enormous giant with its distinctive Eurasian identity.

Few cities have suffered so many dramatic changes in their history as Moscow; changes that have undoubtedly left their mark on its inhabitants and streets. The author shows us the old Moscow and the enigmatic modern city into which it has converted. Reading this book helps to understand the city that has long been a mystery to Westerners, and even to Muscovites. It is through anecdote and vivid description that we are led through labyrinthine Moscow, explore its magic and beauty hidden under apparent chaos. According to Tatiana Pigareva, Moscow is a city that takes a lot of time and effort to understand, but once discovered, it becomes a passion for lifetime.

Quick and enjoyable reading, extremely entertaining book often compared to Peter Arkroyd’s London: the biography.
