English Summary/英文概要： Modern management theories and concepts from the West have dominated the world for a long time. This dominance could be due to the widespread usage of English as the working language in many countries. There is no reason why this should not be the case, given that there are valuable lessons to be learnt.
The general principles of Western management theories and concepts are applicable in many societies except when cultural differences negate their relevance. On the other side of the globe, Asia has had a civilisation with a long history which encompasses words of wisdom embedded within numerous Asian philosophies. This is particularly true of China which has one of the oldest civilisations in the history of mankind. However, because the lingua franca of many modern day societies is strongly slanted towards the English language, it is inevitable for literature written in other languages such as Chinese, Japanese or Thai to become less relevant for the global audience. This slant towards English creates a strong barrier to the promotion and dissemination of Asian wisdom to the rest of the world.
The purpose of this book is not to promote ancient Asian management wisdom at the expense of modern-day management theories from the West. Both sets of paradigm can coexist side by side. More importantly, the raison d’etre of this book is to demonstrate the fact that a large part of Asian management wisdom handed down many generations is still applicable and relevant today. This book should interest like-minded readers from the West or anyone who wish to learn more about Asian knowledge and wisdom in English.
Chinese Summary/中文概要： 西方的现代管理理论和概念已经在世界范围内占据了相当长的时间，这可能是得益于英语为世界通用语言的语言，使得西化的管理模式得以广泛传播和效仿，但是任何一种模式都会有其自身的缺陷和不足，只要是好的经验和理论我们就应当去学习。
西方管理理论和概念有其通用性，除非是有强烈文化差异的国家。而在地球的另一端，则是拥有悠久历史的亚洲智慧，尤其是世界文明古国之一的中国。但是由于现代社会的通用语言是英语， 这就造成了很多以汉语、日语或泰语的作品在国际上失去竞争力，所以也就不可避免得形成了亚洲智慧传播的困境。
本书的目的并不是为了推广古代亚洲管理智慧而去贬低西方管理理论，而是希望两种理论能够取长补短，并蒂开花，两种模式并排共存。更为重要的是，本书力求证明一个事实，即亚洲许多世代流传下来的管理智慧在当代依然适用并具有值得借鉴和参考的现实意义。(兼职翻译-FSF)

About the Author/作者介绍： 刘瑞平博士现任新加坡国立大学设计和环境学院副院长兼副教授，他拥有新加坡国立大学、伯明翰大学和伦敦大学学院的学位。
Dr Low Sui Pheng Phd,MSc ( Eng) is currently Associate Professor and Vice Dean as the School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. He holds Degrees from the National University of Singapore, the University of Birmingham and the University College London.
