The protagonists, Sophie and Michael who had been lovers in London, represent both Eastern and Western civilizations respectively and some of the best methods of psychological inquiry from both. The novel contains elements of psychology, philosophy, Buddhism and literature in a readable and enjoyable way.
Sophie, a Chinese writer, moves to London after finishing her degree in the UK. She finds life in London difficult and falls out of work, eventually resorting to a job as a receptionist in a brothel to make ends meet. To pass the time, she spends hours reading books, absorbing fields as diverse as philosophy, psychology, literature and so on.
Several weeks later she meets a businessman from New Zealand named Michael. There is an immediate attraction between them and soon the two fall in love. But Michael is a successful businessman, with a wife and children, and the relationship quickly begins to falter. Michael is forced to break off their affair and Sophie is left heartbroken. Shortly thereafter the brothel is raided by the police and she quits her job, finding work through an old classmate.
