The result is a warm, nostalgic, funny and sad account of growing up in the 1970s and 80s. Young and glamorous, but not really cut out for motherhood, Philippa’s unmarried mother moves to Torquay on the south coast with her baby daughter. With no real family to turn to, mother and daughter slowly assemble instead an accidental, eccentric support network. There is Nina, another single mother, and her son, Lucas; Bob Sugar, the local newsagent, with his unrequited love for Philippa’s mother; and Wink, their elderly neighbour with a game show obsession and a pet parrot called Captain.

But life is rarely simple or straightforward. First Lucas, whom Philippa has sworn she will marry when she grows up, dies at the tragically young age of seven. And then the ultimate betrayal: Orville Tupper, a Canadian male model, sweeps Philippa’s mother off her feet and whisks her back to Canada with him. A bereft Philippa is left behind with Bob, Wink and Captain. But, over time, she comes to learn that your real families are the people who love you - and she also learns some very surprising truths about her origins and the extraordinary secrets that seemingly ordinary people keep.
