TIMIDEZZA (MY SHYNESS, MY SELF: LEARN TO LIVE WITH SHYNESS)
Shyness is a very human condition, but one that makes most people uncomfortable when they recognize it on others. Their reaction is commonly one of aggression or derision rather than understanding or compassion. When we recognize shyness in ourselves, our response is often one of fear, self-pity, panic and intolerance. Only very rarely do we react with indulgence, and almost never with appreciation.
The author explores how persistent and unsuccessful suppression of shyness can generate significant pathologies, such as social phobia and suggests a new and constructive approach. He argues that returning to, and examining the origins of shyness, can precede a new acceptance of shyness not as a fault, but as an authentic aspect of our development. The conventional deployment of stratagems, to fight, hide or deny shyness amount to an inappropriate and unhelpful denial of the formation of our own personalities. Instead, the exploration and use of creative play with shyness, allows us to inhabit this experience without being frightened of becoming childlike.
The author urges us to abandon the temptation to seek cures for our shyness. Shyness is not something to be eradicated, or excluded. On the contrary, shyness is to be praised, as a part of a determined acceptance of one’s own reality.
(sandy)
