Enormous changes are taking place in China. A new image of the emerging giant as a formidable, free-market competitor, increasingly able to challenge the leading multinationals on their home territory is rapidly replacing the old stereotypes of a tightly controlled Communist monolith. In the process, China has moved beyond is initial status as a source of cheap labor for low tech manufacturing. The latest Chinese super computer is 40% faster than anything the US has produced. It took China just one year to surpass American companies in high tech solar and wind manufacturing. China is at the forefront in the competition with other multinationals to sell a high-speed rail link from Los Angeles to San Francisco. China’s aircraft industry expects to be in the competition with Boeing and Airbus for midrange air carriers.

Many of China’s most powerful corporations are still unknown to the public at large, yet they are beginning to have a critical impact on events outside China. For instance, ICBC, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has assets of more than $240 billion. It was rich enough to have bought Citigroup. In 2006, ICBC launched the largest IPO in history, earning $21.9 billion. And ICBC is not alone. Just about everyone has heard of Ebay and Yahoo, yet China’s leading internet search engine, Baidu, has a market cap that is twice that of Yahoo, and considerably higher than Ebay’s. Tencent, China’s leading internet company, with 600 million users --nearly twice the population of the US--is roughly equivalent in value to Facebook, and its financial prospects are more promising, since it is an acknowledged leader in social communications over the net. Most Americans have never heard of it. How did China get to where it is today? Even more to the point, where is it likely to find itself tomorrow?

Going Global: The Emergence of China’s Multinationals, tells the little-known story of China’s determination to take on global capitalism at its own game, and it explores in detail the challenges that China’s new multi-billion-dollar corporations represent to American companies.

The book describes how leading private sector Chinese companies made possible by the economic reforms instituted by Deng Xiaoping fought to survive in a hostile economic environment in which they were forced to compete with little or no financial backing in a market often rigged against them by politically connected, state-owned industries. The gold rush created by China’s transition to free market capitalism has turned many of these early entrepreneurs into some of the business world’s fiercest competitors.

The corporations include Lenovo, which began as a small electronics company named Legend, and eventually bought IBM’s laptop computer business; Huawei, which recently competed for a $3 billion contract to extend Sprint/Nextel’s wifi network across the US; TCL which bought both RCA and Thomson; Haier, a manufacturer of air conditioners and washing machines which forced Whirlpool to buy Maytag in order to keep its Chinese competition from buying an American brand name as a way of enhancing its sales in the US market. In this book, we show that China, far from being a low-cost manufacturer of cheap goods, is fast emerging as a dynamic force in a wide range of industries and services. While Western multinationals were looking primarily at other multinationals as their principal competition, an expanding number of Chinese companies that until recently had been off everyone’s radar screen were fast emerging as major forces in the market.
