English Summary/英文概要： England, 1767. Erasmus Kemp, son of the Liverpool Merchant’s original owner is determined to secure the insurance he believes his father was due following the “lawful jettisoning” of the slaves on its original ill-fated journey. Twelve years on the crew have been arrested and returned to the UK from Florida where they face trial for mutiny and theft. Erasmus will do what he can through the civil and criminal courts but his growing affection for Jane Ashton, sister of Frederick Ashton, the leading slavery abolitionist, will complicate his thirst for revenge. Whilst the lawyers and insurers lock horns in court and the abolitionist movement grows apace, the Borden family continue to mine the Durham coal fields as their family has done for three generations. The eldest of the Borden’s sons will cross paths with Erasmus in a wholly unexpected way and perhaps change the fortunes of his family forever. In Barry’s wonderful novel these threads come together to give us an extraordinary portrait of those times.
