He has since lived in Edinburgh, Brighton, Leeds and London. He now lives in New Zealand with his wife and two sons.
He is the author of a number of acclaimed novels of psychological suspense and a much-in-demand scriptwriter. He previously worked as an industrial archaeologist, a guinea pig for a multinational pharmaceutical giant, a nightshift worker in a supermarket, a street market trader, a bookseller and as a publishing company sales executive.
His novel Always the Sun was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and his suspense thriller Burial was shortlisted for the inaugural Ngaio Marsh Award. His memoir Heartland was a bestseller.
Neil is the creator of the BBC1 crime series Luther, starring Idris Elba, and was lead scriptwriter for several series of the television spy drama series Spooks.
