Twelve-going-on-thirteen is way too young to be a mother, but that’s exactly how Lexi McGill feels, looking after her little brother Kevin. Their mom had died two years ago and their dad had just left on a European honeymoon with his witchy new wife, Clare—so they’ll be spending part of the summer at something called City Camp. At least it’s in New York City and they get to stay with their crazy actress aunt. When Aunt Roz meets the kids at Grand Central Terminal, she shows them a secret spot in the hallway known as “the whispering gallery,” where voices amazingly travel to the opposite corners. Lexi has fun testing it out with Kevin until she realizes she’s suddenly eavesdropping on two mysterious men—and they’re plotting out a jewel heist!
The clues and descriptions Lexi picks up are spotty at best, and she decides she was probably overreacting to what she had heard—until she sees the headlines in the paper the next morning: “Cleopatra’s Jewels Vanish.” A jewel heist really had taken place en route to a special exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! She can’t tell Kevin because he’s afraid of everything; and she won’t tell Kim Ling Levine, the pushy teenaged daughter of the folks who owns Aunt Roz’s brownstone, because—well, it’s dislike at first sight when they meet and she plans on avoiding her at all costs......
Chinese Summary/
