Meet Loretta Boskovic, a big-hearted woman who cares passionately about her small town, Gunapan. She’s broke but gets by thanks to her female support group and above all, her friendship with the wise old owl, Norm Stevens, who owns the local junkyard (which someone is anonymously trying to get condemned as “Unsightly property”.) It’s Norm on whom she leans when times are hard. It’s Norm who gives her the goats, Terror and Panic, to keep her back yard under control. Handsome, burly newcomer Merv Bull may fancy her, but he’s not her type.
Within the small town of Gunapan there is also the shadowy presence of an immigrant family – a woman, Merhisa, and her four children who we discover are from Bosnia Herzegovina. Loretta discovers that Melissa and Jake have been bullying them, but perhaps it’s reciprocal? Or is it a vicious rumour spread by the frightful Samantha Patterson? Loretta believes that Samantha is in cahoots with a local councillor to ensure that the development plans go through.
Loretta is a larger than life character, a female Don Quixote forever tilting at bureaucracy and pricking pomposity. Will she triumph over the corrupt council and save the school? More importantly will she find the love she so desperately seeks? The Fine Colour of Rust is a witty and engaging read proving that small town life is never dull.
