ONCE UPON A CAR: THE FALL AND RESURRECTION OF AMERICA’S BIG THREE AUTO MAKERS--GM, FORD, AND CHRYSLER

Book ID/图书代码: 06814011B46657

English Summary/英文概要: The American auto industry, an engine of economic and social progress for more than 100 years, is on the brink of collapse. The once-mighty Detroit carmakers put the world on wheels, and in the process created millions of middle-class jobs, provided workers with top-flight health care and retirement incomes, and sustained the economies of countless communities with their factories, dealerships and supplier networks. Detroit’s Big Three—General Motors, Ford and Chrysler—also played a huge role in defining America in the eyes of the world. Whether it was their oversized cars, their prideful advertising, or their relentless consumption of oil, the U.S. automakers personified power, ambition, and a capitalist spirit that seemed indomitable.

Until it all came crashing down. Foreign automakers led by Toyota surpassed Detroit in vehicle quality and manufacturing efficiency. The Big Three’s high wages and benefits became a crushing financial burden. Overexpansion and institutional arrogance made them easy prey for more nimble competitors. And billions of dollars in losses finally exhausted the patience of investors, bankers and creditors.

This yet-to-be-titled book focuses on Detroit’s Last Stand and the events from 2005 until the present. But the goal is not simply to analyze the industry’s downward spiral, but to take readers inside these corporate city-states of G.M., Ford and Chrysler, and show how it happened.
