Jeanne had always lent her pen to others. This time the story she’s writing is her own, however. The strange and poetic love story of Jeanne and “James”. They had met on the Internet in 1999 and seen each other, every so often, in the dark. The rest of Jeanne’s time is spent waiting, and writing. Her own story, and the innocent and unbounded love story of Marguerite and a certain Eugene, a handsome young student met on a beach in Nice, in 1906, and seen only during vacation. Marguerite would write and wait, for six long years, letter after letter. Jeanne would write and wait, too, page after page. The former’s lover would disappear during the early days of World War I. The latter’s would vanish in Afghanistan, or perhaps Gaza or Chechnya. Neither of the two women knows where or how. One day their lovers would just fall silent, and never return. Each woman, a century apart, is swallowed up by grief. Marguerite never recovers, but Jeanne struggles to stay afloat, putting it all on paper and making use of, at times, the curious means of her day.

Valerie Peronnet was born in 1964 in Dakar. She was a journalist for fifteen years in Telerama, regularly works at Psychologies Magazine and is the author of about thirty novels, essays and stories. Jeanne and Marguerite is her first novel.
