THE LAST HUNDRED DAYS
Book ID/图书代码: 12844011B47020
English Summary/英文概要: This beautifully written novel is set in Bucharest during the end of the Ceausescu regime, the period known as ‘the last hundred days’, culminating in the execution of the Romanian leader and his wife on Christmas Day 1989. The central character is a young man, a disillusioned leftist who arrives in Bucharest in 1987 to teach at the university’s recently-purged department of English. The socialist state is in stasis, the shops are empty, paranoia pervades everything, and secret service men lurk in the shadows. This novel has echoes of ‘The Heart of Darkness’ as dissatisfaction forces its way to the surface and the country moves towards bloody revolution.
