ALL ABOUT LOVE: ANATOMY OF AN UNRULY EMOTION
Unruly, unpredictable, love is a maddening deity. He has us singing in the rain or tearing our hair out. Or duelling with his shadows, hate, jealousy and loss. This book tangles with the paradoxes of love through the span of our lives - from rapturous love to love in ’marriage’, in the family and in friendship. It investigates love’s shifts and continuities from the Greeks to the present and examines our present hypersexualized predicament. Drawing on a wide range of sources, ALL ABOUT LOVE shows us how without the varying attachments love puts in place, we would have little of our individuality, less literature, and arguably no society. In her brilliant new book, prize-winning author of MAD, BAD AND SAD: WOMEN AND THE MIND DOCTORS, Lisa Appignanesi searches for the meaning of an emotion.

“Appignanesi proves she has the dexterity to take on such an audacious subject and almost make it look easy." -- Mail On Sunday
“Appignanesi’s anatomising of the emotion is based on what love looks like, and feels like, in today’s post-Pill world, with our high divorce rates, different versions of family life and social-networking mania... Appignanesi moves effortlessly across a cultural terrain which takes in the thoughts of Aristotle, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Mad Men, Friends and Freud.” -- The Telegraph
“A reader drawn to this title is most likely searching for illumination on romantic love, that most joyous and troublesome emotion, and in devoting most of her study to this, Appignanesi does not disappoint... But where she excels is in drawing ideas from literature, and great literature in particular, using writers’ insights with such skill that the colour of the originals reverberates throughout. The author’s own reflections are measured and wise, and raise this keenly-researched volume well above a competent resume of facts and fiction.” -- The Herald Scotland
“(Appignanesi) has written a biography of love; not just romantic love, but every kind of love. It’s crazee, as Patsy Cline would sing, but Appignanesi is up for it...She writes like Barbara Cartland chewing on Freud: “Rupture is built into our raptures.”” -- The Telegraph
“Lisa Appignanesi is an ambitious writer who is temperamentally drawn to big subjects. Now, in All About Love, she has turned her attention to the subject where most of us locate our beginnings, which none of us escape and which at some point in our lives will generally threaten to take us over, like a madness.” –The Observer
