Three thousand letters smuggled in and out of a notorious Gulag labour camp in the Arctic North of Russia, where Lev was a prisoner between 1946 and 1954. This is one of the great love stories of all time. Its themes are universal - courage, hope, endurance and survival, love’s power to save human beings, and the kindness of strangers.

Lev and Sveta fell in love as students in the Physics Faculty of Moscow University at the height of Stalin’s terror during the 1930s. In 1941, Lev went off to war. He was immediately captured by the Germans, and spent the rest of the war in various concentration camps, ending up at Buchenwald. Liberated by the Americans in 1945, Lev declined their invitation to emigrate to the West because he wanted to go back to Moscow, where he hoped to find Sveta still alive. As soon as he entered Soviet territory he was arrested by the NKVD, convicted of ’treason to the motherland,’ and sent to the Pechora labour camp in the Arctic North. From there he wrote to an aunt in Moscow and asked her what had happened to Sveta. He did not want to write to her directly in case she had given up on him and married someone else. A few weeks later he got a letter back - not from his aunt, but from Sveta herself: she had been waiting for him all this time.

For the next ten years Lev and Sveta wrote to one another three or four times every week. They lived for each other through their letters. Their’s is an extraordinary historical document, rich in fascinating details about living in the Soviet Union. What makes the letters so remarkable is that they were uncensored: they were smuggled in and out of the labour camp. The most exciting chapters of the story cover Sveta’s secret and illegal trips to visit Lev in the camp. She made five trips each of which could have cost her own freedom had she or her helpers been caught.

Written with the narrative drive of a novel this will be an extraordinary work by the prize-winning historian. The book is based on unprecedented access to the KGB archive of the labour camp where Lev was a prisoner as well as in-depth interviews with the couple when they were in their 90’s.
