WHAT DOESN’T KILL US: THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF POSTTRAUMATIC GROWTH
Book ID/图书代码: 13000511B47831
English Summary/英文概要: What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.—NIETZSCHE
For the past 20 years, Stephen Joseph has worked with survivors of trauma. His studies have yielded a startling discovery: that a wide range of traumatic events–from illnesses, divorce, separation, assault and bereavement to accidents, natural disasters and terrorism–can act as a catalyst for positive change.
Anywhere from 30 to 90 per cent of people confronted by tragedy, horror and adversity emerge wiser, more mature and more fulfilled, sometimes despite great sadness. Relationships become stronger. Perspectives on life change. Inner strengths are found. Hence many psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors are no longer viewing even post-traumatic stress disorder as a bonafide illness. Rather, they believe, the emotional experiences of people recovering from adversity are the mind’s way of dealing with profound existential issues.
In What Doesn’t Kill Us, Stephen Joseph argues that such people have much to teach the rest of us. In learning how survivors of major disasters can be transformed by their experience, he has discovered that the lessons are valuable to us all. Indeed his work indicates that we all have an innate ability for such growth.
Drawing on the wisdom of ancient philosophers, the insights of evolutionary biologists and the optimism of positive psychologists, he presents the first robust framework for understanding the mental steps involved in growth following adversity (his unique‘THRIVE’model); explores its implications for individuals and society, ranging from our attitude to happiness to our treatment of war veterans; and reveals how all of us can navigate change–traumatic or otherwise–to find new meaning, purpose and direction in life.

“What Doesn’t Kill Us is accessible for all readers, with a slant toward those in the helping and healing professions. It isn’t too thick (in length or subject matter); condenses the latest research into bite size portions; and provides helpful and practical tools for ways to view trauma as a catalyst for growth and positive change, without being preachy, dogmatic or too theoretical. Well worth the time to read, digest, and utilize in one’s daily life.”---Gabriel Constans, New York Review of Books
“A sure-to-be-controversial, provocative challenge to prevailing wisdom on how to deal with stress.”---Kirkus Reviews
“Informative and thoughtful.”---Publishers Weekly
“Although essential reading for clinicians working with traumatised patients, What Doesn’t Kill Us is so accessibly written that it should appeal to anyone interested in the human condition.”---Richard Bentall, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Liverpool
“Tsunamis, assault, near-death accidents: such experiences are popularly imagined to scar victims ‘for life’ and leave them in thrall to post-traumatic stress disorder. After two decades of research, positive psychologist Stephen Joseph argues that, for many, these traumas can become an ‘engine for transformation’. Backed by case studies, he covers trauma’s emotional toll, the underlying biology, the realities of resilience and the array of therapies on offer, such as traumafocused cognitive behaviour therapy. This is a thorough and common-sense look at the psychology of survival.”---Nature
“To say that [What Doesn’t Kill Us] is essential reading would be an understatement. It is essential as a survival guide to life” --- Stephen Regel, Honorary Associate Professor/Co-Director Centre for Trauma, Resilience and Growth School of Sociology and Social Policy University of Nottingham
