A young Finnish couple, Jyrki and Heidi, go on the hiking trip of a lifetime in Australasia with Heart of Darkness as reading material. To Jyrki’s great surprise, his girlfriend Heidi demands to come with him, frightened by the idea of several months of solitude. The trip gradually turns into a tortuous thriller with belongings disappearing and, even more mysteriously, reappearing. The travellers come to be at the mercy of untamed nature Birdbrain describes Western people’s desperate longing for somewhere unspoilt and primitive with biting irony. At the same time, it reveals the dark side of this longing, showing it to be an insatiable desire to control, invade and destroy.. Birdbrain reveals the dark side of the explorer’s desire: the insatiable need to control, to invade and leave one’s mark on the landscape. But what happens when nature starts to fight back?

About the Author/作者介绍： Johanna Sinisalo是當代芬蘭最成功的國際作家。她的首本小說Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi (Not Before Sundown, Tammi 2000)於2004年獲得芬蘭文學獎（the Finlandia Prize for literature）和小詹姆斯蒂普特裡獎（the James Tiptree Jr Award）
小說Lasisilmä (The Glass Eye, Teos 2006)由德國出版社Tropen出版德文，Linnunaivot (Birdbrain, Teos 2008)也獲得了巨大成功，已經出版了法語和英語版本。《衛報》和《出版人週刊》將這兩本書列為重點推薦圖書。“Birdbrain”在入圍2012法國文學大獎Prix Escapades。此書還在挪威出版。

Johanna Sinisalo (b. 1958) is one of Finland’s most successful and original authors. Her first novel, Not Before Sundown (Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi, Tammi 2000), won the Finlandia Prize and has been translated into 13 languages. The Guardian newspaper selected Sinisalo’s Birdbrain (Linnunaivot, Teos 2008) as a best translated novel of 2010, while in France the book was nominated for the Prix Escapades 2012. Birdbrain will soon appear in Norwegian, too. Sinisalo has also produced a fascinating children’s book, The Land of Moebius (Möbiuksen maa, Teos 2010) which will be published in Denmark in 2012.
