WE ONLY KNOW SO MUCH

English Summary/英文概要: The Copelands are a family in crisis. The lives of each family member, from nine-year-old to ninety-eight-year-old, seem to be falling apart. And when you mix all these personal crises together, as only a dysfunctional family can, chaos will reign. Jean, the mother of the household, is trying to cope with the suicide of her secret lover. Her husband Gordan is preoccupied by his certainty that he is slowly losing his most prized asset, his mind. Their nineteen-year-old daughter, Priscilla, has a bad attitude and has found herself at a paralyzing crossroads in her career, despite the caveat that she has never had a career. She is determined to become a reality star, but she can’t quite figure out how to jump start it. Otis, the nine-year-old son, is falling in love for the first time. When he seeks advice from his mother, Jean is distracted by her own problems and confides disturbing truths about love that don’t help him at all—rather, they may well drive him to therapy in ten or twenty years. Theodore, the grandfather, has Parkinson’s, and the family vacillates between attempting to deal with it and ignore it. Finally, ninety-eight year old great-grandmother Vivian has decided to chase a self-centered, unresolved dream from her youth. Do the Copelands come together at the end to somehow resolve, or at least make sense of, all their crises? That is for the reader to decide.
Distinct and vibrant, wise and funny, WE ONLY KNOW SO MUCH ingeniously satirizes our muddled quest for love and meaning in all the wrong places. Using a razor sharp narrative voice, Crane brings to life characters with heart, depth, and compassion—characters we can’t help rooting for despite their failings, and whose stories live with us long after a book is finished.
