THE BANKER’S DAUGHTER

A remarkable first novel that is part psychological thriller, part contemporary parable. A vivid insight into the unstoppable power of the super-rich, and the world of Islamic banks.

All our parents have secrets.

But Hanna Mehdi’s father is unusual. He ran a major bank that collapsed in suspicious circumstances. When it fell, he turned up at her door and told her they had to run away. They fled to a luxury hotel in Beirut which has now become home. They have a yacht. She wears the latest designer clothes.

One day she discovers that her father may have done far worse than make risky bets on the money markets. She finds a photograph that turns her comfortable life upside down. She has to ask: Has my father been lying to me all this time? Are we in danger? Is my father a murderer?

As Hanna follows the trail of blood from Beirut to Lahore to London, her eyes are opened to the real world in which she has been living, a world in which men do whatever they want, women hold their peace and money buys the ability to avoid all responsibility. Suddenly she is forced to grapple with the costs of her freedom. What will she choose: the dull and guilty ease of being the banker’s daughter? Or the rough comfort of facing up to the truth?

Emran Mian’s brilliantly tense, atmospheric debut takes us deep into the psychology of those whose lives depend on the unscrupulous rich, and makes us think about our own complicity in creating monsters.

Chinese Summary/

More about the plot:

Hanna is a beautiful, cultured young woman from a Pakistani family who has always lived a life of luxury among the international jet-set. Her father has been the head of one of the world’s most successful banks: IBCD, the International Bank of Commerce and Development - or to some ‘the International Bank of Charm and Deception’. Started in London by a small group of Shia Pakistanis, it grew into a massively powerful organisation, responsible for the sovereign debt of many countries. But the bank had secrets. Sunnis from Saudi Arabia wanted to take it over. The bank resisted. The private power struggle caused the bank to crash and its unorthodox financial dealings to be exposed. Hanna’s father was forced to flee the UK overnight to avoid arrest. Hanna followed him.

When the novel opens, Hanna and her father have been living in a hotel in Beirut for two years. After the initial months of fear, they have relaxed into a dull routine. But then Hanna finds a photograph on her father’s laptop showing him and a group of his friends looking triumphantly at a severed head. And when she starts to ask questions, travelling from Beirut to Lahore to London, she finds herself embroiled in an investigation that makes her a pawn in the game.
