This is the incredible story of his life as a counterfeit artist, active from 1943 to 1971. His convictions lead him to spend his entire life in hiding, guided by survival instincts, necessity and danger alone. A race against the clock – and against death – in which every minute truly counted.
Adolphe Kaminsky’s story takes the reader around the world, conjuring up the ghosts of a century shaped by political conflict, racial hatred, ideological belief and the struggle of oppressed peoples for dignity and freedom. A world in which convictions can only be upheld through unflagging resistance, at the risk of one’s own life. A work that questions the notions of commitment, destiny, free choice and consequences. When Kaminsky at the age of seventeen begins making forgeries for the Resistance, little does he realize that he is already caught up in an inexorable mechanism : that of his own sense of duty towards fellow man. His adherence to movements of seemingly contradictory nature would spark controversy and frequently lead to his being misunderstood. And lastly, a dialog between a father and a daughter. Kaminsky’s daughter Sarah, born in 1979, attempts to understand her father’s unusual destiny, giving us the account of a man whose very existence was a secret and who accepts, at last, to speak of the past. Kaminsky, in other words, played an important role (always under a new name and appearance) in most of the twentieth century’s major conflicts: he provided hope.
