Working for Joseph Pulitzer’s World newspaper, journalist Nellie Bly herself requested to set out to break the record for the fastest trip around the world. Traveling by herself (almost unthinkable for a young woman of the time) and carrying only a single bag (equally unthinkable), Bly managed to circle the earth in only seventy-two days - the fastest trip ever recorded. Elizabeth Bisland was hired by her employer to set out from New York on the very same day. The two traveled in opposite directions: Bly heading east, Bisland west. It was a race that spanned twenty-eight thousand miles and for months captivated the attention of the United States and much of the world besides.

Though the book reads like an historical adventure novel, every bit of it - from itinerary to clothing to weather - is absolutely true. Using newspaper and magazine accounts, guidebooks, diaries, biographies, and the books that both women wrote about their trips, the author has vividly re-created the race and its aftermath, beginning with the departure from New York, proceeding through Europe and Asia, and culminating in the nail-biting final days of the contest. Along the way the reader travels, with Bly and Bisland, to Jules Verne’s walled Amiens estate; into the back alleys of Hong Kong; onto a Ceylon tea plantation; through Sierra Nevada mountains blocked by snowdrifts twenty feet deep; and to many more unexpected and exotic locales.

The two women traveled on the most modern forms of transportation yet created, the oceangoing steamship and the steam railroad, sending back messages to waiting editors by means of telegraph lines that had - in the expression of the period - annihilated space and time. They traveled across the breadth of the British Empire, on ships carrying the tea and cotton and opium that helped sustain the imperial economy. Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland were not only racing around the world; they were also racing through the very heart of the Victorian age.
