THE MISSING SHADE OF BLUE
Arriving in Edinburgh from Paris to work on a translation of the philosopher David Hume, diffident Edgar Manson looks forward to an atmosphere of enlightenment and quiet calm. Drama is the last thing he expects, yet soon after his arrival, Manson comes into contact with the academic Harry Sanderson and his younger beautiful artist wife, and then Edgar’s meticulously circumscribed life is suddenly propelled into violent chaos.Survivor of a solitary childhood and an adolescent breakdown, Manson’s every instinct is to hold passion and disorder at bay; while Sanderson – overweight, anarchic, brilliant – is hurtling towards calamity, in furious rebellion against his colleagues and on the brink of a nameless mania. Drawn into Sanderson’s dangerous orbit – by his irony, intellect and fearlessness, and by the secrets that underwrite his marriage to the lovely, elusive Carrie – Manson must engage not only with the Sanderson’s hidden fears, but with his own too.
This is a compelling portrait of sexual jealousy and a profound meditation on the human capacity for happiness, and is inventive, intelligent and absolutely involving. It is also a book about language, secrets, emotional engagement. The title refers to Hume’s theory expounded in A TREATISE OF HUMAN NATURE which aimed to show that the mind can generate an idea without first being exposed to the relevant sensory experience. It is, as you would expect from the author of GHOSTING, extraordinary, absorbing, and it possesses a clarity of perception, and a confidence of voice.
(XJJ)

This is Erdal’s debut novel in her own name (though she wrote novels under the name of Naim Attallah, her former employer, and publisher of Quartet). Like Siri Hustvedt, she delves deep into the nature of self, a kind of off-centred-ness, and has an interest in the workings of language. I have to confess that I haven’t read Muriel Barbery’s THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG, but Richard likens Erdal’s novel to that. It reminded me personally of Elizabeth Winthrop’s work in that nothing very much happens, yet the book is completely absorbing in its utterly convincing study of Sanderson’s character. A bit Chekhovian, in that sense, now I come to think of it. GHOSTING (sad, funny and beautifully written – The Sunday Times; An astonishing story – Chicago Tribune)was a Radio 4 Book of the Week, serialised in The Guardian, extracted in Granta, and shortlisted for two awards.
