ABDICATION: A NOVEL
Book ID/图书代码: 04300011B49632
English Summary/英文概要: ‘Nicolson’s eye for period detail is spot-on, and her characterisations of the main players are superb … a delightful story of a friendship forged by the drama of the Abdication and the approaching war; ideal for the intelligent deckchair’ - Kate Saunders, Sunday Times, 9 June 2012
Real and created characters are mixed so credibly, readers might wonder which is which. Nicholson brings the past alive with the panache one would expect from such a fine social historian. The story moves with all the elegance of the Chief Whip’s Rolls Royce’ - Douglas Osler, Scotsman, 28 July 2012
‘Goodness, Juliet, it really is good. I’m in awe of your ability to move from non-fiction to fiction so seamlessly. You wear the historical detail lightly but what’s so reassuring is knowing that, coming from you, one can trust in every word. I was completely gripped by the story of David and Wallis Simpson because it’s not one I’ve ever delved into much, so finding out that she was trying to get out of it was fascinating. But no less compellingly drawn were the rest of your cast of characters. The kindly Evangeline, driven to pathetic jealousy. The almost-but-thank-goodness-not-quite caddishness and earnestness of Julian (just a perfect rendition of a man of that era), the sweet but fiery May, the love and fear felt by Florence and the genial Philip. And, because I am thinking about this sort of thing quite a lot at the moment (!), a tightly-worked out plot, no word to waste. I was particularly intrigued by the way everyone fell apart when Juliet was no longer available to them – something that only occurred to me later, so subtly did you draw it’ – Jessica Fellowes, author of The World of Downton Abbey
‘Perceptive. Clearly Nicolson has done her research’ - Victoria Stewart, Evening Standard, 7 July 2012
‘This debut novel brings the skills of a gifted social historian to bear on familiar material, and so makes it strange again’ - Independent, 21 June 2012
‘Juliet Nicolson’s busy novel brings a turbulent period to vivid life … the cast of kings and courtiers, American socialites and upper-class fascists grips throughout’ - Max Davidson, Mail on Sunday, 24 June 2012
‘Historian Nicolson’s first novel beautifully evokes the troubled Thirties’ - Choice Magazine, 1 July 2012
‘Impressive in its scope and ambition … Nicolson is encyclopedic in her portrayal of a fascinating period of history’ - Elena Seymenliyska, Daily Telegraph, 30 June 2012
‘It’s all very Upstairs, Downstairs/Downtown Abbey’ - Vogue (Australia), August 2012
‘Highly readable ... a new take on the events of 1936, because it introduces a marvellous fictional character ... this is definitely the abdication as you never read it before, and difficult to put down’ - Antonia Fraser, Sunday Telegraph Summer Reads, 22 July 2012
