CELLS TO CIVILIZATIONS: THE PRINCIPLES OF CHANGE THAT SHAPE LIFE

A world-leading scientist provides an eloquent sweep through the history of modern biology, surveying the latest developments and controversies to reveal the deep beauty and unity of life. In the 1980s, Enrico Coen helped to place the lowly snapdragon in the spotlight. His work at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK, used these flowers as a model organism for studying plant development. Identifying and cloning several genes that affect flower shape, size and colour, he and his colleagues developed a model to describe how genes interact to direct flower formation – contributions that have earned him numerous awards and recognition.

It has since become clear that many of the basic principles of plant development can be applied to animals, too. And now, in Life’s Creative Recipe, Coen draws on these findings to outline a new unified theory of biology. Whether in evolution, development or learning, life seems to delight in going from the simple to the complex, he says; and for the first time in a book aimed at a general readership, he attempts to unravel the essential ingredients of what he calls life’s creative recipe: the common principles that account for how elementary beings evolved over billions of years into a vast array of complex species; how a microscopic egg transforms itself into a tree, butterfly or peacock; how a helpless newborn child turns into a walking, talking reasoning adult – and how these related transformations extend into our own culture and creativity.

In the grand tradition of Richard Dawkins’s The Selfish Gene, Brian Greene’s The Elegant Universe and Roger Penrose’s The Road to Reality, Life Unmasked is an important, original and ambitious work. One of the book’s distinctive features is the reproduction of paintings by artists such as Cezanne, Monet and Botticelli to illustrate its central themes and ideas. As Coen notes, there are many parallels between the artistic process and life’s creative recipe. It’s through this highly interwoven and often surprising story that the hidden unity of life becomes revealed.

在理查德·道金(Richard Dawkin)的《自私的基因》(The Selfish Gene),布瑞恩·格林尼(Brian Greene)的《优雅的宇宙》(The Elegant Universe)和罗杰·彭罗斯路(Roger Penrose)的《到现实生活》(The Road to Reality)的隆重的传统中,《生活揭密》(Life Unmasked)是一个重要的,本质的和雄心勃勃的作品。 (LNL & CK)
