JANE’S JOURNEY: THE LIFE OF JANE GOODALL (BASED ON THE MOVIE)
Book ID/图书代码: 00770011B50833
English Summary/英文概要: This is the story of Jane Goodall, who has changed our views about chimpanzees through the controversial findings she made during her research in the jungle of Tanzania. Today she travels the world, campaigning for the protection of the environment. Her research has made her popular throughout the world. Jane Goodall has dedicated her life to the chimpanzees and the protection of their environment. “Mr. H.”, her plush monkey, accompanies her on all her trips around the world. He has already visited 59 countries, having been introduced to more than three million people so far.
From her childhood on, it was Jane’s dream to visit Africa. Following her mother’s advice, Jane became a secretary and film assistant, working part-time as a waitress during her traineeship to save money for her trip to the “dark continent”.
In 1957 she embarked on a trip to visit an old school friend in Kenya. Here she met the prestigious paleontologist und anthropologist Louis Leakey – a decisive encounter in her life.
Leakey had spent his entire life searching for the remains of prehistoric humanoids and was looking for an assistant to carry out observations on chimpanzees. His idea was to study the behavior of chimpanzees and to draw conclusions about the behavior of prehistoric human beings.
He offered the assignment to Jane because she was a woman, loved animals and didn’t have a university degree: From Leakey’s point of view these were ideal preconditions for the observation of chimpanzees, because he thought women were more patient than men and also able to understand nonverbal utterances better. Moreover, a scientist with a university degree would probably be more prejudiced by official teachings.
Jane accepted the assignment and started her expedition in 1960, accompanied by her mother, Vanne. As very few research results were available at the time, Jane had very few resources to rely on for her preparation. Her most outstanding observation was that chimpanzees make use of tools. This observation was truly revolutionary: until then, man had been defined as the only creature capable of using tools. Now, as Leakey commented, either man, or the tool needed to be redefined, or else we would have to accept chimpanzees as human creatures.
Obviously, Jane’s observations caused ambivalent reactions. Scientists considered her approach unscientific, mainly because she gave the monkeys names instead of numbers, thus documenting a personal relationship with them, which queried her objectivity. On the other hand, her work had a significant impact on a wider public, changing our common views on chimpanzees and making her work popular around the world.
Today Jane Goodall travels around the world most of the year, holding speeches and campaigning for the protection of the environment. To create a better world for future generations she has established the famous TACARE program in Tanzania for environmentally friendly agriculture, as well as the worldwide Roots & Shoots program, which enables young people to face the global challenges of the 21st century.
