But life in his idyllic small Maine town quickly gets turned upside down after the events of 9/11.

Enniston has become a "secondary migration" location for Somali refugees, who are seeking a better life after their country was destroyed by war—they can no longer go home. Tom hasn’t thought much about his Somali classmates until four of them join the soccer team, including Saeed. He comes out of nowhere on the field to make impossible shots, and suddenly the team is winning, dominating even; but when Saeed’s eligibility is questioned and Tom screws up in a big way, he’s left to grapple with a culture he doesn’t understand and take responsibility for his actions. Saeed and his family came out of nowhere and vanish just as quickly. And Tom may find himself going nowhere, too, if he doesn’t start trying to get somewhere.

Some guys have all the luck.
At least, Tom Bouchard does. Top of his class, top of his game (soccer), the guy with the hot girlfriend and even hotter college prospects (if he can get his applications done), he’s definitely, in the words of his not-so-lucky childhood friend, Donnie Plourde: “Big Man on Campus with a Side of Rock Star.”

So when a stupid prank against a rival school lands both teenagers on the wrong side of the law and at the bottom of a 100-hour mountain of community service, it’s a whole new world for Tom. Trouble takes him places he never dreamed of. Like the K Street Center, a run-down old church in the sketchy part of town, where, after practice each day, he’s the new “homework helper.”

There he meets Myla, the college student volunteer with the patch of purple dyed hair and blue, blue eyes. And Samira, the Somali refugee girl who might be rockin’ a bomber jacket one day and a full length hijab the next, but who is always hard to get along with. Then there is her brother, Saeed, the newcomer to this town, who doesn’t speak much English but sure speaks soccer. With a corner kick that lofts and bends into the goal like it’s carried on the wings of angels. Suddenly, Tom’s new world includes the possibility of a state soccer championship.

But here’s the thing about luck: it isn’t fair.
A story of friendship and loss as well as betrayal and hope, OUT OF NOWHERE is about young people who come from impossibly different worlds but discover that they share the same dreams.
