LONG LIVE THE KING

Mid-December 1901 – mid June 1902

Book Two is rather darker. It’s the story of a run-away, sixteen-year-old, Adela, orphaned niece of Robert and Isobel, and how she is finally brought home to Dilberne Court, with its one hundred rooms, her virtue preserved, but only just. Home is rumoured be haunted, as were most historic houses of the time. The action takes place in the run-up to the Coronation of Edward VII, planned for June but cancelled at a day’s notice. The Dilberne fortune has been restored, thanks to Mr Baum, Minnie is married and pregnant, trying to come to terms with her new role as lady of the manor, and her charming but controlling mother-in-law Isobel. Both Robert and Isobel become caught up in preparations for the Coronation, he in tandem with Arthur Balfour, future Prime Minister and spiritualist, she with the beauty Consuelo Vanderbilt, Duchess of Marlborough, lady in waiting. But it’s Adela who most concerns us. While the Dilberne’s argue over her long term future – Minnie and Isobel want to take her in, Walter and Robert, for reasons of past history, don’t – Adela, a girl of no mean spirit, runs away and joins a travelling group of spiritualists, along with her former maid Ivy whom she meets at a séance held in Balfour’s house in Carlton Terrace. Ivy has the genuine powers of a medium, Adela has not. But Adela, to Ivy’s rage, is the one credited with saving the life of the King, who so nearly died of appendicitis – his illness the reason the coronation had to be cancelled. Robert relents and takes a reformed Adela back home, chastened, still a virgin, but in the company of a young working class conman she is, to the House’s consternation determined to marry. She does.

THE LOVE AND INHERITANCE SERIES ——《Huffington Post》

——《Booklist》
