THE WINTER FOUNDLINGS
It’s the coldest winter on record, and young girls are vanishing from the streets of north London. Ten year-old Sarah Robinson was taken on her way to the corner shop, and Ella Williams never returned home from school. When Sarah’s body is found in a cardboard coffin outside the Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury just before Christmas, it’s clear that her killer is following in the footsteps of the UK’s most prolific child murderer, Louis Kinsella. He is abducting victims on the same dates of the year, and from the same streets that Kinsella terrorised seventeen years before.
Psychologist Alice Quentin is working at Northwood Secure Psychiatric Hospital, when DCI Don Burns asks for her help. Alice has to win Louis Kinsella’s trust, to discover exactly what he knows. This presents Alice with her toughest challenge yet, because he is a brilliant manipulator, fuelled with psychopathic certainty that his evil acts were justified. He also looks just like her violent father who terrified her as a child. When Kinsella was a primary school headmaster he killed nine young girls before being caught, and until now has never spoken of his crimes. Alice has to trade secrets with him, to break down his wall of silence.
The ritualised style of the attacks reveals that the killer, Chris Steadman, is obsessed with the Victorian regime at London’s first orphanage, the Foundling Museum. He sends mementoes from each murder scene to Louis Kinsella: a scrap of fabric from a victim’s dress, a shoe buckle, and a lock of hair. Steadman is a former pupil of Kinsella’s and is working at Northwood to be near his guru. He imprisons his victims in the derelict London boys’ home where he grew up. Soon his killing spree moves west, so he can place his human tributes closer to Kinsella. Autopsies show that the children are not sexually abused, but are being kept in the freezing cold. The killer enjoys watching them suffer.
Alice’s personal life is as complicated as the case. Her relationships with her mother and brother remain tense, and she has started a flirtation with Tom Jensen, a sports instructor at Northwood. Like Alice, Tom finds intimacy hard. He was a priest until he lost his faith, and since then he’s avoided commitment. His interest in Alice intensifies to a frightening level as the case progresses, but she is becoming attracted to Don Burns.
When another victim’s body is found yards from Alice’s rented cottage, she realises that her own life is in danger. Ten year old Ella Williams, is still being kept in captivity. She has used her charm and intelligence to win Steadman’s trust, and when he abducts Alice and gives her a drug which temporarily paralyses her, only Ella has the power to set her free.
(DC)
